tobey's reaction to homemade foods

I gave Tobey a bowl of plain yogurt with homemade granola and homemade berry sauce, and he took two bites and said to me, "Dump it, mommy.  Dump it."  I fell the same way, Tobey.  The same way.

first attempt at homemade granola

This smelled really good while it was cooking so I felt really bad for Adam who fasted today for Ash Wednesday.  I think it tastes pretty good!

ash wednesday and lent

Today's the first day of Lent which is probably my favorite of the liturgical seasons. It is a great time to simplify your life by leaving out all the junk and spending more time with God. I love the beauty and significance the Church places on this season.  Tobey was born during Lent (on a Friday at that!) so it holds a special place in my heart because of that as well. Today at the Ash Wednesday service we sang a song that I remember singing when Tobey was only a couple weeks old, and it nearly brought tears to my eyes. "Long have I waited for your coming home to me and living deeply our new lives."

So for this year for Lent, I am doing two things.  Number one, I am giving up sweets.  I have done this before, but I love sweets so it truly is a sacrifice for me. Secondly, I am only checking Facebook once a day. This is already killing me because I know people have posted stuff on my wall. While the first one is about sacrifice, and I think the second one is more about self-control.

Adam is doing his usual. No soda, no ice cream, and praying the rosary once a day.  He is just his normal self!

Tobey is not doing anything since he is only 2 (or almost 2), but I'm going to attempt to pray a decade of the rosary with him every Friday.  We'll see how it goes.

so this is so totally blog-worthy...

Today at mass, we were sitting in the same pew as this family of a mom, a girl, and two boys.  I see them every week sitting near us, but I don't know them.  They are always so nice to Tobey, but I don't know them.  Anyways, towards the end of mass, Tobey wanders over to their end of the pew.  The mom is pointing out something near the altar to one of the sons that is sitting closest to Tobey.  As the mom is pointing, Tobey walks over as close as possible and starts pointing in the same direction as the mom.  It was as if Tobey was saying, "yeah, it's right over there."  The look on his face was like this was no big deal, and the family had no clue Tobey was doing this.  Adam and I cracked up.

my favorite red coat

On Friday at Mass, Tobey was eating some cookies.  He started to run so I chased after him.  When I caught him, his cookie went flying out of his mouth.  I made a point to get it after we left mass since I took Tobey out to the Narthex to sit quietly in my lap.

So I got the cookie when we left and put it in the pocket of my favorite red coat.  When we got home, I put the coat on the back of a chair and then got on the computer.  I must have been really absorbed in what I was doing because a little bit later, I heard this strange sound.  I turned around, and Penny had eaten a hole through my jacket to get the cookie that I forgot was in there.  And now there is a hole in my favorite red coat.  :(

a little trickery

Tobey was trying to be a trickster today.  After lunch we always do nap time.  I make him go straight from table to his room to get ready for a nap.  No playtime whatsoever.  It has been this way for a LONG time...probably 6 months.

Today, he finished his meal first and said "play". I told him no, got up, picked him up (while he was kicking and screaming), and told him it was naptime like always, even though I was still eating my lunch.  I'd just eat that after he was down.  As I am carrying him into his room, he says to me, "eat".  Okay, so I'm thinking he is telling me he is still hungry, so I take him back to the table and put his food in front of him.  He pushes it away and points to my food and says "mommy eat."  Then he says "play" as he attempts to get down from his chair.  So that little trickster thought that he could play since I wasn't done with my lunch.  Maybe the new rule should be he goes done for a nap after his lunch, not after lunchtime.

adventures in juicing

Adam and I recently got a juicer after watching a movie for free on Hulu, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead.  It was a very interesting documentary, and I'd definitely recommend watching it if you have a free hour and a half.  Not sure you can believe everything you see and hear, but the idea of consuming more fruits, veggies, and whole, unprocessed, foods is the major theme and important for all to hear.

Anyways, so we got a juicer.  We had a $50 off $50 code for JCPenney for buying something that was mistakenly priced so they did not ship it to us.  So we naturally looked for something that was exactly $50 so we could get something for free...and there was a juicer!

The first juice we made was from the Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead movie...Mean Green Juice.  It consisted of Kale (we used collards), celery, cucumber, apple, and lemon.  I like most veggies, but I do not like cucumber and celery so I thought the juice was nasty.  Adam tolerated it, but Tobey sucked it right down.  We didn't let him drink a whole lot so that he wouldn't get sick.  Anyways, we decided to try other juices.

The next juice we made was carrot, apple, and sweet potato.  It was good, but it was really sweet.  Again, Tobey sucked it right down.  I probably wouldn't make this one again because of the sweetness.

Today, I made another juice, and it was really good!  I didn't use a recipe but just collected things from the fridge.  It included collards, 1 celery stick, carrots, apples, lemon, and an orange.  I'll definitely do that one again!

starting the car and other stuff

When I was bringing groceries into the house, I had kept a car door open because Tobey had put his "gee" in the car.  A little bit later, I went out to find him trying to put the cross of my rosary into the car ignition.

He is also saying more and more phrases...my personal favorite is "no way".  I have no clue where he got that from.

Whenever Tobey doesn't want me to be around (for example, when he wants to play with daddy), he tells me to "go, cook".

got to brag about tobey

Tobey seems to be really smart.  Today he told us that "Mamool" and "Mommy" start with "M" and "Tobey" (or as he says it, "Tattoo") and "Train" start with "T".  Should that be Kindergarten level stuff?

funny things tobey said yesterday and today

Yesterday:  He was waking up from his nap, and I could hear him in his crib saying, "Turn around.  Turn around."  Then when I opened his door, he was jumping up and down in his crib.

Today:  I was making Tobey's birthday party invites, and I showed him one and told him it was for his birthday. Then he says, "Eat cake."  Yep, Tobey, you will eat cake at your party.  Smarty pants.

awesome

Today, Tobey told me that keys go into electrical sockets.
